《The Rise of Western Rationalism》

Western rationalism - nature, of course, and genesis - was Max Weber's dominant historical interest. It was the grand theme of his two world historical studies, Economy and Society and The Economic Ethics of the World Religions. His studies of the relationships among economy, polity, law, and religion are lasting scholarly achievements. 沃夫岡．施路赫特（Wolfgang Schluchter）

1938年出生於德國的路德維希堡（Ludwigsburg）。1967年畢業於柏林自由大學（Doctor rer.pol., Freie Universität Berlin），1972年在曼海姆大學（Universität Mannheim）取得教授資格（Habilitation），1973年起任教於杜塞爾多夫大學（Universität Düsseldorf），於1976年，與80（1896）年前的韋伯一樣，獲聘於海德堡大學（Universität Heidelberg）任教，從此使海德堡大學成為韋伯研究的重鎮。

施路赫特教授是世界著名的韋伯專家，著有多本有關韋伯的作品，在德語世界的社會學界裡，其聲望僅次於哈伯瑪斯（Jürgen Habermas）、盧曼（Niklas Luhmann）等人，對於韋伯的社會學理論，以及從古典到當代的社會學理論的分析與探討，有卓著的貢獻。他長期擔任《韋伯全集》的主編，為海德堡科學院院士，也曾擔任德國總統科技顧問教育委員會主席，主導德國高等教育的改革多年，現任海德堡大學Marsilius高等研究院院長。

林端（1958-2013）

1980年畢業於臺灣大學社會學系，1989年畢業於德國哥廷根大學，並以優異的研究成果，獲得畢業論文獎學金。同年跟隨韋伯專家施路赫特（Wolfgang Schluchter），專攻韋伯社會學理論與儒家倫理，1994年獲得海德堡大學社會學博士學位。

林端曾任臺灣大學社會學系教授兼社會科學院副院長、政治大學宗教研究所兼任教授、北京大學社會理論研究中心副理事長、香港理工大學《社會理論學報》主編。學術專長為：韋伯社會學理論、法律社會學、宗教社會學、儒家倫理研究、文化社會學、文化人類學。主要著作包括《儒家倫理與法律文化：社會學觀點的探索》（1994，2002增訂版）、Konfuzianische Ethik und Legitimation der Herrschaft im alten China: Eine Auseinandersetzung mit der vergleichenden Soziologie Max Webers（Berlin: Duncker & Humblot, 1997）、《韋伯論中國傳統法律：韋伯比較社會學的批判》（2003），以及論文六十多篇。
